ShockLogs
It seems that as the internet starts to gain more momentum on a daily basis that new concepts branch out from the already existing ones all the time. This is actually a good thing if you think about it because it shows that the variance that we wouldn’t normally see in our offline culture has room to grow and be nurtured in our online culture. This can only be good in the long run and even something like a ShockLog might have positive consequences later on down the road.
ShockLogs are basically blogs that get their viewership through shock value. They have been around for awhile and indeed many people in international circles are already well aware of what it is that ShockLogs are. They are less known in North America, but you have likely seen their equivalents in the offline world before. Whenever people insult each other with no apparent reason or whenever radio hosts go on sprees that are designed to promote hatred of someone with different viewpoints than your own, you are seeing the offline version of a ShockLog. When this is transposed to the online blogging format, then you are going to get the ShockLog.
The primary type of ShockLog that is available online today for people to read is the one that bases its comments on political ideology. This is the type of log that disparages someone that doesn’t have the same partisan political views that the author of the blog has and indeed goes so far that many people might be completely shocked by the content that they read. This shocking content then goes so far as to draw a number of hateful comments from other people that read the blog posts and even things like death threats might be seen on the actual comments section of a particular post in a ShockLog. People that have visited it before will be expecting to see this, but if you visit a ShockLog for the first time then prepare yourself for it to be a thoroughly shocking experience.
What exactly is the purpose of ShockLogs? Well, the initial purpose of the average ShockLog was to make people stop and think about things. The initial purpose was as a free speech endeavour that people wanted to use in order to provide a platform from which they could question the status quo conventional wisdom in such a way as to get people really thinking about these issues.
However, that is not at all what ShockLogs are used for today. Over the space of just a few months in time, ShockLogs have become advertising monetary revenue tools. People that hate a ShockLog will still visit it on a regular basis in order to leave comments and have arguments, so what it eventually boils down to in that case is the fact that the ShockLog is going after as much viewership as it can get so that the advertisers feel good about advertising on the ShockLog. It is important that they therefore continue to shock people in order to bring them back and primarily this is how the vast majority of ShockLogs do their business in today’s world.
